By combining innovative forms of representation with critical narratives, the N4F Lab aims to revive the visionary potential that urbanism—as both a discipline and practice—has seemingly lost, particularly in light of the ongoing fragility of urban territories. Understanding the city as an intricate web of relationships among human and non-human populations, the N4F Lab will investigate how non-fiction visual media and filmmaking can address this myopia in urban
studies and planning. This includes generating new knowledge upon territorial and environmental fragility while fostering engagement and driving change to counteract it.
The Lab will explore on how non-fiction multimedia and films can be key sites of urbanism in the making by pursuing at least three major mathodological breakthroughs:
1) Showing Webs of Fragilities: Multimedia elements can complement traditional urban analysis tools like mapping to highlight the intricate relationships that contribute to urban fragility.
2) Inspiring Anti-Fragility Actions: Through artfully told stories and emotional narratives, audiovisual works can uncover overlooked insights beyond the data, inspiring planning efforts to envision effective counteractions to fragility.
3) Engaging Neglected Actors: By presenting diverse perspectives through audio-visual tools, the Lab will reach broader audiences beyond specialists, enhancing listening, mutual learning, and understanding in urban planning decisions and actions against fragility.
