An Italian survey on the architectural project, on the theme of the margin understood as a social and territorial condition. Alongside a general reading of trends and approaches of the contemporary project in Italy, the research unfolds in three actions (call for projects by invitation) on a quarterly basis, and for the duration of one year, on specific and exemplary case studies for the declination of the theme.

The project is intended to be a one-year pilot test promoting design activities within CRAFT on the theme of the margin as context and condition. The proposal could become a permanent activity for the entire duration of the project, involving from time to time the different interdisciplinary design groups of DASTU, together with other Italian colleagues.

The project has a ‘basic’ and an ‘applied’ research dimension. The basic research aims to build an overview of the design activities and approaches present in Italy (and subsequently extend it to an international dimension) on design in marginal contexts - who are the groups, what messages, what approach? - in order to draw an overall picture of the state of the art. The second ‘application’ phase consists of inviting a number of project groups (academic and non-academic) to give specific answers on a theme and project approach. The three calls for projects will be characterised by a precise thematic focus on the margin condition and will have one of the three proposers as a reference.
The groups invited to participate will be five per call, for a total of 15 participants.
