Prison design practice is linked to a constantly emergent mode of intervention, acted out on a fragmented level by the excessive degree of complexity of the system, which leads to the ‘atomisation’ of spaces and the ‘separation’ of interventions. The main way of reconnecting the fragments of the system is the re-composition of the stories and narratives revealed by the situated practices of research and design in the different places.

Atlante Carcere is the outcome of a participatory process, understood as the composition of a choral geography of the prison. The main mode of reconnecting the fragments of the prison system is the re-composition of the stories and narratives revealed by the practices located in the different places. Within the geometric boundaries of San Vittore, the co-participated actions of research and project, carried out directly by the research team or revealed by the relationship with the internal and external operators, as well as the inhabitants, reveal a topological geography made up of the qualities of the individual spheres and the relationships that connect practices and places. There are many relational practices through which to record the participants' stories; these include interviews, focus groups, co-design workshops also involving students, as well as weekly visits to Off Campus spaces that facilitate informal encounters.
In parallel, we will seek out those in Italy and Europe who are engaged in similar activities, visiting these experiences and interviewing their protagonists.
The Atlas is intended to be an operational tool and a capacitation pathway addressing both to the multifaceted prison institution, from a project perspective, and the inmate and agent population from an anti-fragile perspective.
